We first load the file, then we print it as a post-processing step. This is both more flexible and clearer. We also refactor the comments handling to minimize the logic that is living in the Lexer. Indeed, the main API is now living in the printer, and complex interactions with the state are not possible anymore, including the removal of messing with low-level summary and state setting!

Virtually all classifications of vernacular commands (the STM classifier, "filtered commands", "navigation commands", etc.) were broken in presence of control vernaculars like Time, Timeout, Fail. Funny examples of bugs include Time Abort All in coqtop or Time Set Ltac Debug in CoqIDE. This change introduces a type separation between vernacular controls and vernacular commands, together with an "under_control" combinator.

We move delicate library/module instillation code to the STM so the API guarantees that the first state snapshot is correct. That was not the case in the past, which meant that the STM cache was unsound in batch mode, however we never used its contents due to not backtracking to the first state. This provides quite an improvement in the API, however more work is needed until the codepath is fully polished. This is a critical step towards handling the STM functionally.

We make the Stm API functional over an opaque `doc` type. This allows to have a much better picture of what the toplevel is doing; now almost all users of STM private data are marked by typing. For now only, the API is functional; a PR switching the internals should come soon thou; however we must first fix some initialization bugs. Due to some users, we modify `feedback` internally to include a "document id" field; we don't expose this change in the IDE protocol yet.

We move toplevel/STM flags from `Flags` to their proper components; this ensures that low-level code doesn't depend on them, which was incorrect and source of many problems wrt the interfaces. Lower-level components should not be aware whether they are running in batch or interactive mode, but instead provide a functional interface. In particular: == Added flags == - `Safe_typing.allow_delayed_constants` Allow delayed constants in the kernel. - `Flags.record_aux_file` Output `Proof using` information from the kernel. - `System.trust_file_cache` Assume that the file system won't change during our run. == Deleted flags == - `Flags.compilation_mode` - `Flags.batch_mode` Additionally, we modify the STM entry point and `coqtop` to account for the needed state. Note that testing may be necessary and the number of combinations possible exceeds what the test-suite / regular use does. The next step is to fix the initialization problems [c.f. Bugzilla], which will require a larger rework of the STM interface.

the state of parsable streams, so that different lexing/parsing processes can be started independently without conflicting. Note however that these different lexing/parsing processes cannot be run concurrently as they still work on the same piece of global memory (i.e. calls to entry_parse should remain atomic). To go further, one would typically need to be able to functionally pass the lexing state to each call to the lexer. Note that currently the beautifier is also running in the context of a lexer/parser state (for the mapping of location to comments). In particular, this fixes #5102 (parsing/lexing of bullets depending on the lexing state which was global).

Coq locations already had support for this, but were containing dummy information. We now don't need anymore to reconstruct this information by browsing the file when printing an error message or enriching exceptions on the fly. It also became easier to interface with Coq since locations emitted by the lexer now always contain full information. On the API side, Loc.represent disappeared and Loc.t is now exposed as record. It is less error-prone than manipulating a tuple of 5 integers. Also, Loc.create takes 5 arguments instead of 3 and a pair.

Instead of modifying exceptions to wear additional information, we instead use a dedicated type now. All exception-using functions were modified to support this new type, in particular Future's fix_exn-s and the tactic monad. To solve the problem of enriching exceptions at raise time and recover this data in the try-with handler, we use a global datastructure recording the given piece of data imperatively that we retrieve in the try-with handler. We ensure that such instrumented try-with destroy the data so that there may not be confusion with another exception. To further harden the correction of this structure, we also check for pointer equality with the last raised exception. The global data structure is not thread-safe for now, which is incorrect as the STM uses threads and enriched exceptions. Yet, we splitted the patch in two parts, so that we do not introduce dependencies to the Thread library immediatly. This will allow to revert only the second patch if ever we switch to OCaml-coded lightweight threads.

The process_transaction function adds a new edge to the Dag without executing the transaction (when possible). The observe id function runs the transactions necessary to reach to the state id. Transaction being on a merged branch are not executed but stored into a future. The finish function calls observe on the tip of the current branch. Imperative modifications to the environment made by some tactics are now explicitly declared by the tactic and modeled as let-in/beta-redexes at the root of the proof term. An example is the abstract tactic. This is the work described in the Coq Workshop 2012 paper. 2012-03-23A unified backtrack mechanism, with a basic "Show Script" as side-effectletouzey
Migrate the backtracking code from ide_slave.ml into a new backtrack.ml. In particular the history stack of commands that used to be there is now non-coqide-specific. ** Adapted commands ** - "Show Script": a basic functional version is restored (and the printing of scripts at Qed in coqtop). No indentation, one Coq command per line, based on the vernac_expr asts recorded in the history stack, printed via Ppvernac. - "Back n" : now mimics the backtrack of coqide: it goes n steps back (both commands and proofs), and maybe more if needed to avoid re-entering a proof (it outputs a warning in this case). - "BackTo n" : still try to go back to state n, but it also handles the proof state, and it may end on some state n' <= n if needed to avoid re-entering a proof. Ideally, it could someday be used by ProofGeneral instead of the complex Backtrack command. ** Compatible commands ** - "Backtrack" is left intact from compatibility with current ProofGeneral. We simply re-synchronize the command history stack after each Backtrack. - "Undo" is kept as a standard command, not a backtracking one, a bit like "Focus". Same for "Restart" and "Abort". All of these are now accepted in coqide (Undo simply triggers a warning). - Undocumented command "Undo To n" (counting from start of proof instead of from end) also keep its semantics, it is simply made compatible with the new stack mechanism. ** New restrictions ** We now forbid backtracking commands (Reset* / Back*) inside files when Load'ing or compiling, or inside VernacList/VernacTime/VernacFail. Too much work dealing with these situation that nobody uses. ** Internal details ** Internally, the command stack differs a bit from what was in Ide_slave earlier (which was inspired by lisp code in ProofGeneral). We now tag commands that are unreachable by a backtrack, due to some proof being finished, aborted, restarted, or partly Undo'ed. This induce a bit of bookkeeping during Qed/Abort/Restart/Undo, but then the backtracking code is straightforward: we simply search backward the first reachable state starting from the desired place. We don't depend anymore on the proof names (apart in the last proof block), It's more robust this way (think of re-entering a M.foo from an outside proof foo). Many internal clarifications in Lib, Vernac, etc. For instance "Reset Initial" is now just a BackTo 1, while "Reset foo" now calls (Lib.label_before_name "foo"), and performs a BackTo to the corresponding label. Concerning Coqide, we directly suppress the regular printing of goals via a flag in Vernacentries. dev/ocamlweb-doc has been erased. I hope no one still use the "new-parse" it generate. In dev/, make html will generate in dev/html/ "clickable version of mlis".
